HYBRID HUG
2016
The configuration of new the urban settlement ensues from a metaphysical link between idea and form. Instead of uneven point structures, two hybrid buildings originate from the shape of the site and wrap the landscape in a kind of embrace.
Hybrid Hug is envisioned as the turning point of the contemporary city: monofunctional becomes multifunctional, marginalization turns into interaction, sustainability ceases to be only technology.
The master plan provides for the separation of the passage routes. The landscape contains mixed types of botanical gardens bracketed with lap pools, walkways, leisure and sport facilities.
The buildings appear as suspended over the ground and floating on the near river. The decision to float the structures is inspired by the hope to create views towards the surrounding landscape: the Mount San Pablo, the river and the city of Bilbao. The floating horizontal structures allow the protection from flooding, the preservation of 50.000 m2 of land and, therefore, the reduction of the heat island effect.
